U.S. English, Inc. Director of Government Relations, Tim Schultz, appeared on the Fox News program 'Fox and Friends' to discuss whether election ballots should only be printed in English.

The New Jersey Supreme Court this week created the first ever constitutional right to receive D.U.I. testing in the native tongue of the accused as it overturned the conviction of a man who refused to take a blood-alcohol test because he did not understand the warnings in English.

With the signature of Democratic Governor Phil Bredesen, Tennessee became the first state today to protect the rights of businesses to have English-in-the-workplace policies where there is a “legitimate business necessity.”

Earlier today, the United States Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on H.R. 2499, the Puerto Rico Democracy Act. The bill, which recently passed the House by a vote of 233-169, would create a congressionally sanctioned referendum to determine the future status of Puerto Rico.

On Thursday night, The United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 2499, Puerto Rico Democracy Act by a vote of 233-169. In a separate vote, an amendment that would have required English as the sole official language as a condition for Puerto Rican statehood was defeated 194-198.

Rep. Buck McKeon co-sponsored the English Language Unity Act yesterday, becoming the fifth Congressman in six weeks to support legislation to make English the official language of the United States. The addition of the representative from California’s 25th Congressional District increases the bi-partisan roster of supporters of H.R. 997 to 133.

Support for H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act, grew on Friday when Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson added his name as a co-sponsor. The Democrat from Minnesota’s Seventh Congressional District is the second member of Congress this year and fourth in six weeks to become a co-sponsor of the official English bill.

The York, Pa. Highway Department will soon post signs in Spanish within the city, raising questions on how this will affect English language learning rates among the area’s growing limited English speaking population. As reported by WHTM, the City of York plans to add a dozen snow emergency signs in Spanish to inform residents that their cars will be towed if parked there during or in the wake of a heavy snowstorm.
