As part of our educational efforts the U.S.ENGLISH Foundation has sponsored the production of a series of educational video programs for newcomers entitled Communicating Survival. The series has been designed to educate newcomers on a range of issues that each U.S. resident needs to know. The series includes programs that teach viewers about existing emergency procedures (Emergency: Call 911), acquaint them with performing a job search (Help Wanted), and explain important facts about U.S. laws (Its the Law).
The Its the Law program, which is of particular importance, covers issues ranging from the obligation of each driver to carry car insurance to laws guiding appropriate behavior in public. It also provides viewers with valuable information on how to obtain a drivers license or what needs to be done in case of a car accident. The program clarifies other important laws pertaining to possessing weapons and purchasing and/or consuming alcohol. It points out the importance of childcare and explains differences that may exist between the culture and laws in the immigrants country of origin and in the United States.
The program is an invaluable educational tool for immigrants and a way of facilitating their first steps to acclimatization in our country.
