Dear Official English Supporter:
Legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 27 2003 which would declare English as the official language of the United States
government. The legislation - "The English Language Unity Act of 2003" (H.R. 997) -
was introduced by a bipartisan group of Congressmen.
In order to make this legislation a reality, we need your help. U.S.ENGLISH
is asking you to either write or call your Congressional representative and
ask that he/she sign on as a cosponsor of H.R. 997. If you would like to
call, please dial the Capitol switchboard at 202/224-3121 and ask for your
representative's office. If you would like to write your congressional representative,
a sample letter is provided below for your use. (If you do not know who your
Representative is, please visit our
legislator lookup page and type in your address information.)
Thank you in advance!
Sincerely,
Mauro E. Mujica

SAMPLE LETTER SUPPORTING H.R. 997
The Honorable (insert name)
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Re: H.R. 997 - "The English Language Unity Act of 2003"
Dear Representative (insert name):
I am writing to ask that you join with several of your
colleagues as a cosponsor of H.R. 997 - "The English Language
Unity Act of 2003."
As you know, H.R. 997 would require nearly all Federal
official government business to be conducted in English,
and all documents to be printed in English, while protecting
individual Constitutional rights. Of course, exceptions
would include documents to protect public health and safety,
law enforcement, court translations, and tourism.
Most important, H.R. 997 would encourage immigrants and
give them the incentive to learn English. It will help them
participate fully in our economy, to use government services,
and to understand our political process. It will also define
a much-needed, common sense, properly focused language policy.
As one of your constituents, I strongly encourage you to
sign on as a cosponsor of H.R. 997 and to pass this important
piece of legislation.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
