I was late to a meeting at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, CA. It is located about a mile and a half from the border with Mexico. I drove around San Ysidro, a community of the City of San Diego looking for the proper street. Not finding it, I stopped on a street of small stores and asked if anyone knew where the high school was. I received blank stares because none of those in the shops or on the sidewalk spoke English. I thought perhaps I had inadvertently crossed the border! No, I was still in the U.S. but for all intents I was in a foreign country. My wife stopped shopping in many stores in the neighboring city of Chula Vista, because clerks don't speak English or ignore her because she is not Mexican.
