Write a Letter to Your Elected Officials

To see if U.S. English already has a letter writing campaign running in your area, please click here to visit our Action Center.

Even if we do not currently have a letter writing campaign underway, feel free to write letters to your elected officials expressing your strong support for making English the official language of the United States. Members of Congress pay more attention to letters from their constituents than to telephone calls. Take the time to write, even if it is just a brief note. Click here for a sample letter to your elected officials.

Be sure to state the bill number for the legislation you are writing to support. In the House, this is H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act. Use specific arguments, being persuasive and demanding. Don’t just inform them of your opinion, go further and request them to:

  1. Co-sponsor official English legislation if they have not done so already.
  2. Support this legislation in committee and by bringing this legislation to the floor of the House for a vote.
  3. Keep you informed of their position and how they are working to ensure that all Americans share the common bond of English.

Please feel free to send U.S. English, Inc. copies of any replies you may receive from your elected officials on the subject of official English. For more guidance with your letter, see our talking points for to-the-point facts about Official English.
