Maryland Town Votes to Make English The Official Language

Walkersville Latest to Approve Unifying Language Law

The commissioners of Walkersville, Md. unanimously voted to make English the official language of the town Wednesday night, making this community the latest to approve an official English law. Walkersville is the latest of more than 50 towns, counties and cities that have considered measures to make English the official language, including Taneytown, Md. which approved a resolution in 2006.

The town of more than 5,000 people is located north of Frederick, Md. and is part of Frederick County, where 32 languages are spoken at home.

U.S. English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S. English, Inc. (www.usenglish.org) now has more than 1.8 million members.
