U.S. English, Inc. Welcomes the 111th Congress to Washington

*** Statement by U.S. English, Inc. Chairman Mauro E. Mujica ***

January 6, 2009

“On behalf of millions of official English supporters nationwide, I want to welcome the members of the 111th Congress to Washington, D.C. At a time of much uncertainty, the American public has turned to you to set our nation’s agenda and get us moving again.

“While you face the most difficult economic climate in generations, one task you have been entrusted with is common to every Congress since our nation’s founding: the responsibility to maintain a unified nation from a diverse people. The recent election demonstrated the value of that unity – individuals of all races, religions and nationalities coming out to cast ballots as American citizens.

“It is up to the 111th Congress to uphold that unity, valuing the factors that join our diverse people, most notably the English language. For more than two hundred years, the English language has knocked down ethnic barriers and provided opportunity to millions. It has been the key to education, better jobs, and most important, becoming a part of our great American society.

“During the 110th Congress, I was pleased to work with Republicans and Democrats who brought four amendments to the floor to reduce government multilingualism and emphasize English learning. I was glad to see more than 150 members join Rep. Steve King as co-sponsors of H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act, and work with several of these esteemed members to introduce other official English bills.

“I look forward to working with members of the 111th Congress on similar legislation and to spirited debate on the issue in the coming year.”
