New poll finds 84 percent of Americans support English as the official language.

May 15, 2009

A new survey from Rasmussen Reports finds that 84 percent of Americans say English should be the official language of the United States. The survey of 1,000 adults found that just nine percent oppose the measure, while seven percent are not sure. The same Rasmussen Reports survey also found a high rate of support the idea that employers should have the right to require their employees to speak English in the workplace. Numerous polls over the last 20 years have found overwhelming support for making English the official language of the United States. For more information, see these polls from 2008, 2007, 2005, and 2004.
