Rep. Lincoln Davis Becomes Newest Co-Sponsor of H.R. 997

June 9, 2009

Rep. Lincoln Davis became the newest co-sponsor of H.R. 997 yesterday. The addition of the Tennessee Democrat increases the number of supporters of legislation to make English the official language of the United States to 116 members from 36 states.

Currently in his fourth term representing the Fourth Congressional District of Tennessee, Rep. Davis was also a co-sponsor of official English legislation in the 110th Congress (2007-2008). The second new co-sponsor of H.R. 997 this month and the tenth new co-sponsor of the spring, Rep. Davis is the fifth member of the Tennessee delegation to sponsor H.R. 997.

In other Congressional business yesterday, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina and Rep. Robert Aderholt of Alabama became co-sponsors of H.R. 1588, legislation that would protect employers who adopt English-in-the-Workplace policies. The bill, introduced by Georgia Representative Tom Price, now has 54 co-sponsors since its introduction in March.
