U.S. English Member Voices Heard in Congress

Petitions in support of official English delivered to several Capitol Hill offices

August 10, 2009

U.S. English delivered member petitions in support of official English legislation to several members of Congress today, continuing the nationwide push to make English the official language of the United States. The petitions, which ask U.S. Representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 997 [The English Language Unity Act] were given to the offices of Rep. John Mica (FL), Rep. Steve Buyer (IN), Rep. Paul Kanjorski (PA) and Rep. Mike Pence (IN). Each petition was signed one or more members of the representative’s district.

“These documents send a loud and clear message that Americans overwhelmingly support making English the official language of the United States,” said Mauro E. Mujica, Chairman of the Board of U.S. English. “It’s one thing to see consistently high poll numbers that support official English, but written contact from citizens puts real names behind those figures. We will continue to carry the voices of U.S. English members to elected officials until Congress carries out the desire of the people and makes English the official language of the United States.”

Since April, U.S. English has collected more than 83,000 online and mailed petitions from members scattered across all 435 Congressional Districts. Individuals interested in signing a petition and having it delivered to their member of Congress can fill it out online at www.usenglish.org/petition, or by calling U.S. English at 202-833-0100.

Earlier deliveries have resulted in increased Congressional support for official English legislation. Since the petitions were issued, Representatives Lynn Jenkins, Tom Rooney, Travis Childers and Glenn Thompson have listened to their constituents and become co-sponsors of H.R. 997. A full list of co-sponsors of The English Language Unity Act can be found here.

H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act, would make English the official language of the United States and require that most government business be conducted in English. The measure, which was introduced in February by Rep. Steve King, has the support of 120 bi-partisan co-sponsors from 36 states. At this time, the bill remains in the committees to which it was referred after introduction.
