U.S. English Audiocast - Translations for All in New Haven?October 28, 2009
Parents in New Haven, Connecticut are locked in a battle with the school district, demanding that the school district provide translations and translators for Spanish speaking parents. Chanting, “Tear down the wall, translations for all,” the group “Teach Our Children” recently marched outside the Board of Education building, insisting that the school undertake the costly and divisive translation program.
Among their many demands, members of “Teach Our Children” want the district to provide translators at school orientation, translate all school notices and documents in Spanish, offer translator at all Board of Education meetings, increase the number of translators at each school and issue a guide of district translators available to parents. In this audio clip, Tim Schultz, U.S. English, Inc. Director of Government Relations discusses these outrageous demands in a district where funds are tight and more than 50 languages are spoken at home.
