Congressional Support for Official English Continues to SwellRep. McKeon becomes newest co-sponsor, fifth in six weeksJanuary 20, 2010
Rep. Buck McKeon co-sponsored the English Language Unity Act yesterday, becoming the fifth Congressman in six weeks to support legislation to make English the official language of the United States. The addition of the representative from California’s 25th Congressional District increases the bi-partisan roster of supporters of H.R. 997 to 133. Rep. McKeon has been a leading supporter of official English legislation since being elected to Congress in 1992. He has been a co-sponsor of measures to make English the official language and voted for an official English measure when it came to the House floor in 1996. A strong advocate for education, McKeon ascended to the leadership of the House Education and Workforce Committee, where he held a subcommittee hearing on official English in 2006. In May, 2008, he earned an “A in English” award for his efforts to unite Americans under the common language of English during the 110th Congress. The English Language Unity Act was introduced by Rep. Steve King in February 2009. Though H.R. 997 is now one of the most widely supported bills in the 111th Congress, House leadership has not yet scheduled a committee hearing on the bill.
