An elementary school in California is now requiring students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning in English and Spanish. A poll from the Huffington Post currently shows that a majority of readers have concerns about this policy—U.S. English does, too. The Pledge of Allegiance is a symbol of unity amongst our diverse nation, and English is our common language, the thread that holds us all together as Americans. U.S. English encourages all citizens to become fluent in foreign languages, but the Pledge of Allegiance is one act that we believe should be recited solely in English. Reciting the Pledge in any other language undercuts the national identity that the English language creates. See the video below from KGET-TV in Bakersfield, California, on this controversial issue:
