WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. ENGLISH, Inc., the nation's oldest and largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States, today announced the availability of a free e-mail newsletter. The U.S. ENGLISH Report debuts today and will provide quarterly news, commentary and updates on official English and other language issues. The purpose of the newsletter is to communicate with the 1.7 million members of U.S. ENGLISH, Inc. and to provide those interested in language issues with a quarterly summary of legislation, events and trends. U.S. ENGLISH, Inc. published a print newsletter called the U.S. ENGLISH Update until 1996, but The U.S. ENGLISH Report will be the first electronic newsletter produced by the organization. The e-newsletter comes at an important time for supporters of official English. Congress is currently considering H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act of 2003. This legislation was introduced by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) in February and would declare English the official language of the United States government. In addition, U.S. ENGLISH, Inc. is targeting several states for official English legislation. “We have been getting more and more requests for an e-mail newsletter to keep our membership base informed about our activities,” said Mauro Mujica, Chairman of U.S. ENGLISH, Inc. “In addition to spreading information about our education and lobbying efforts, The U.S. ENGLISH Report will help to chronicle our drive to make English the official language of the U.S. I encourage anyone who is interested in language issues to subscribe.” The first issue of The U.S. ENGLISH Report will be sent out today.
