U.S. English Chairman Praises Introduction of Bill to Declare English Official Language of Pennsylvania

March 24, 2014

Washington, DC—U.S. English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement in response to the introduction of a bill in the Pennsylvania General Assembly that would declare English the official language of the Keystone State.

HB 2132, introduced by State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, would also prohibit funding for foreign language translations and services in all official state government functions.

“The passage of Representative Metcalfe’s bill would make Pennsylvania the 32nd state to recognize the unifying role of the English language,” Chairman Mujica said. “Declaring English the official language of the state government does not limit the languages individuals can speak; rather, it adds an incentive for all Pennsylvania residents to learn the language of success—English. Among the 152 languages spoken in Pennsylvania, English is the one that has the power to unite, providing residents a common means of communication amidst their cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I encourage the Pennsylvania General Assembly to help create a level playing field for all state residents by supporting the passage of this unifying bill.”

HB 2132 is expected to be referred to the House State Government Committee for further consideration.
