U.S. English Chairman Applauds Common Sense English Regulations for Sacramento Taxi DriversU.S. English Chairman Applauds Common Sense English Regulations for Sacramento Taxi DriversMay 30, 2014
Washington, DC—U.S. English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement in support of new regulations requiring taxi drivers in Sacramento, California to pass a basic English language skills test to maintain certification. “Most jobs in the United States require English proficiency as a condition for employment, and for taxi drivers, it should be no different,” Chairman Mujica said. “More than 95% of United States residents speak English. Being able to communicate in the nation’s common language is essential to any business’ success. In fact, encouraging taxi drivers who are not currently proficient in English to learn is likely to improve not only their business dealings, but also their daily lives. These regulations will be an advantage to taxi drivers and passengers alike, and I commend the Sacramento City Council on their enactment.” The new regulations passed this week by a unanimous 9 – 0 vote. The changes will also require drivers to show knowledge of Sacramento geography and dress professionally. Several other cities in the Golden State have already passed similar regulations.
