U.S. ENGLISH Praises Senate Democrats' Move to Stall Amnesty Measure

Statement by U.S. ENGLISH Chairman and CEO Mauro E. Mujica

WASHINGTON, D.C. - We are pleased that Senate Democrats stood tall by opposing and postponing the rushed through measure by the Bush Administration to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. These lawmakers have listened to the American people who have flooded their telephone lines urging a vote against the Bush plan and have seen the proposal for what it is: political pandering of the highest level.

U.S. ENGLISH has long said that such a move would incite resentment from immigrants who came to this country legally and send a very dangerous message to those wishing to enter our borders. It is our hope that our federal lawmakers forever halt action on this ridiculous bill.

Immigrants who follow the rules should be rewarded, not those who break the law. This is an example of bad policy being set in order to pander to a politically powerful interest group, in this case the Mexican-American lobby, at the expense of fair play for all immigrants.

U.S.ENGLISH is the nation's oldest and largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S.ENGLISH now has more than 1.5 million members nationwide.
