I grew up in a home with grandparents who came from Poland. While we were bilingual in our home, we always spoke English outside and never expected anyone to know Polish. My grandparents, who never became fluent, seemed quite isolated, however. As I grew up in Detroit, I remember going to the Henry Ford Museum and seeing the fact that this man had placed signs in his factory in various languages that kept telling his workers to "learn English." Henry Ford realized that this was the way to success in this country.
I believe that many countries that have two national languages end up feeling like countries divided like in Canada (Quebec) and in Belgium. I truly believe that one national language is important and English in this country should be it as it has been with us since the founding of this country.
