I arrived in the U.S. in 1960 as a 26 year old Swede with a Green Card, to stay for a year to gain some experience and learn the language better. That was 51 years ago and I am still here!
I was fortunate to have had 4 years of English (and 3 of German and 1 of French), so my English was good enough to get a job and work myself up the technical management ladder.
My father also immigrated to the US as a youngster and hardly knew any English when he arrived on Ellis Island. He stayed in the US for 9 years and left a job as a Foreman at Packard Motor Cars to go back to marry the gal that later became my mother. Both my wife and my son were amazed as to how well he remembered his English, up until his death at 96!
I am convinced that both of our progresses were to a large extent based on our ability to learn the nuances of the English language.
