The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation is a nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based 501 (c)(3) educational foundation that disseminates information on English teaching methods, sponsors educational programs, develops English instructional materials, represents the interests of Official English advocates before state and federal courts and promotes opportunities for people living in the United States to learn English.

Mauro E. Mujica, an architect and international businessman as well as an immigrant from Chile, has been the Chairman/CEO of the U.S.ENGLISH Foundation since 1993 and prior to that, served on the Board of Directors beginning in 1992. Because of his commitment to keeping this nation unified through a common language and his own experience as an immigrant, Mr. Mujica has succeeded in making U.S.ENGLISH one of the fastest-growing interest groups in the country. Since 1983, the U.S.ENGLISH Foundation has made important, nationwide contributions to the English language literacy effort, and believes a shared language provides a cultural guidepost that we must maintain for the sake of our country's unity, prosperity and democracy.

The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation contends that learning English quickly and learning it with English-speaking peers is the best way for English learners to get ahead academically and socially. Although English learners do require special language assistance, it is the Foundation's stance that this assistance should be short-term and transitional.

Recent studies show that English comprehension and literacy are two of the most important factors in determining economic independence, yet unfortunately, the opportunities to learn English are limited, and with long waiting lines. Perhaps at no other time in our nation's history has this need been so great.

It is the goal of the U.S.ENGLISH Foundation to ensure that English continues to serve as an integrating force among our nation's many ethnic groups and remains a vehicle of opportunity for new Americans.

The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation maintains a database of ESL (English as a Second Language) classes across the nation. If you would like to volunteer to help people learn English, or if you need information on where classes are offered in your area, please call us at (202) 833-0100 or email us at [email protected].

The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation is a separate organization from U.S.ENGLISH, Inc., which works to pass legislation related to our common language.
