My grandmother, Nana to us, was raised by Italian immigrants. She taught herself to read, write and speak English. She said that it was the language of the United States and it was important to know English and be fluent in it. She was my role model growing up. Whenever I felt like I could not do something, I remembered how she taught herself and where she went with her life. She went on to teach her parents and siblings English as well. Her English was better pronounced than most young Americans today. I miss her dearly but I never forgot the lessons she taught me.
